Brothers of the Phin,
Saturday, August 21, 2010 we celebrated our USSVI base commissioning at the Cardinal Golf & Country Club. We had 91 attendees. The Luncheon started with a social hour at noon, which was followed with at sit down meal at 1300 hours. After the meal, we enjoyed our guest speaker, Cdr. Kerry Gentry USN-Ret. After his presentation, Jim Myers and Mike Burkholder spoke on the history of submarine veterans in North Carolina and forming the USSVI – Tarheel Base, Mike was the first Tarheel Commander. Tom Carr (President - USS Nathanael Greene Assn.) gave a short biography of General Nathanael Greene. Dick Kanning followed with the presentation of the Base Charter and the swearing in of the elected board. Tom Carr and John Trubee presented the Base with a 6” Weems & Plathe Brass Bell. Jim Schenk, Butterbean Dixon, and Jerry Leppard all made presentations. We then did the “Tolling of the Boats” with our “new” bell. As customary we gave out several “door prizes,” 50/50 raffle was held, and Bill Whelan the big cash winner. Plank Owner certificates were presented followed by a couple more hours of socializing.
Putting this Base together was a real team effort. A special thanks to:
♦  Base Treasurer Chuck Jensen for his admin talents (e.g., putting the C&B together, and setting up the books, keeping tract of the membership)
♦  Tom Carr & Jack Jefferies for their recruitment of USS Nathanael Greene sailors into our Base and several of them are also new to USSVI.
♦  Base Secretary Ed Galaviz and Joe Clark with setting up the Cardinal Golf & Country Club (both are members) for our Luncheon.
♦  Vice Commander Jim Myers for setting up American Legion Post 55 as our meeting place.
♦  SED1 D.E. Kanning for his guidance in forming the Base, also presentation of our Base Charter and swearing in the Board.
I have probably neglected in mentioned several others that have helped, to them forgive me for my omission.
John Rupertus, First Base Commander
