Tarheel Base Community Service Project - Nov 2011

Fred G. Bond Metro Park in Cary
November 12, 2011
On the morning of Saturday, November 12, a team of ten Tarheel Base Submarine Veterans participated in the inaugural Adopt-A-Spot service project at Fred G. Bond Metro Park in Cary. The initial project was scrubbing the hulls of the park’s fleet of paddle boats in preparation for their seasonal lay up. While this proved to be a challenging task, the team rose to the occasion completing the work nearly an hour ahead of schedule demonstrating Submariner team work and camaraderie. After a job well done, the team gathered for lunch at the Mellow Mushroom.
Earlier this year, the Tarheel Base members voted to participate in the Town of Cary Adopt-A-Spot Program by adopting the Fred G. Bond Metro Park. The Adopt-A-Spot program is part of Cary’s new Spruce Program designed to encourage community participation in maintaining Cary’s public areas. Community groups are recognized by signs posted in the adopted areas.
In a few weeks two prominently located USSVI signs will be erected at Bond Park. Over one million people visit Bond Park every year; park visitors will read our USSVI signs as they stroll about the park and realize that Submariners continue to serve!
The ten Tarheel hull scrubbers included: Gordon Banks, Dave Campbell, Jim Davis, Wolfgang Friedrich, Bob Govern, Duane Gow, Bill Lowe, Wayne Powell, Jim Wallace and Bill Whelan.
